Eug\u00eanio Rubi\u00e3o: biographical profile<\/strong><\/p>

Eug\u00eanio \u00c1lvares Rubi\u00e3o was born in the city of Silvestre Ferraz, current Carmo de Minas, Minas Gerais, on April 14, 1887, and died in Belo Horizonte on March 1, 1949. Son of Francisco de Barros \u00c1lvares Rubi\u00e3o and Mariana Camila Noronha Rubi\u00e3o, he was the brother of Luiz Jos\u00e9 \u00c1lvares Rubi\u00e3o, a writer and journalist based in S\u00e3o Paulo. He was a writer, philologist and teacher. He began teaching in his hometown and then in other cities in his region, in the south of Minas Gerais.<\/p>

He married Maria Antonieta Ferreira Rubi\u00e3o, with whom he had four children. Among them, the writer Murilo Eug\u00eanio Rubi\u00e3o (1916-1991), who in his brief “Self-portrait” writes: “My father, a man of good humanistic culture, was a philologist and belonged to the Minas Academy of Letters. He used to writte with rare elegance, despite being a grammarian.”[1]<\/sup><\/a> His other children were the doctor Paulo Em\u00edlio, Maria Olympia and Maria Eug\u00eania.<\/p>

With their children still young, the couple moved to Belo Horizonte, settling in a house on Goitacazes Street, downtown, where Maria Antonieta’s family lived. Eug\u00eanio Rubi\u00e3o began teaching at Modelo Normal School, current Instituto de Educa\u00e7\u00e3o, and later at Arnaldo School. In these teaching establishments he graduated generations of students, standing out for his dedication and deep knowledge of the Portuguese language.<\/p>

According to Maria do Sameiro Fangueiro, “Recognized for his work, Eug\u00eanio Rubi\u00e3o was nominated to the chair n. 35 of the Minas Gerais Academy of Letters, succeeding Navantino Santos (1885-1946), its founder.”[2]<\/sup><\/a> He wrote for the newspaper Folha Nova<\/em>, from Carmo de Minas, as a collaborator, having three of his chronicles published: “Olhos verdes”, in n.2, in January 1914; “Um Domingo de 1914”, in n.4, in February of the same year; and “Riacho do Carmo”, in n.425, in November 1922.<\/p>

Rubi\u00e3o published three prose books: No horto suave da legenda, in <\/em>1923; Trovas<\/em>, in 1938; and Nos caminhos do Evangelho<\/em>, in 1939, these two being edited by Oficina Gr\u00e1fica Editora Renato Americano, in Rio de Janeiro. He also wrote three textbooks: Prontu\u00e1rio de ortografia e pros\u00f3dia<\/em>, in 1936; Pontua\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em>, in 1935; and Trechos errados<\/em>, edited in Belo Horizonte by the Official Press in 1944.<\/p>

Rubi\u00e3o pays homage to the city of Belo Horizonte in the poem “Bello Horizonte ao luar…”, transcribed from the pages of the magazine Cidade luz<\/em>:<\/p>
